Daughter of Neenah standoff victim plans protest

Posted

NEENAH, Wis,- Athea Callahan is organizing a protest Saturday afternoon at Eagle Nation Cycles where her dad, Michael Funk was killed.

"Why is this OK to not give us any answers or to pretend you're giving us answers when you're really not," said Callahan.

She says her reason for the demonstration is simple.

"There's nothing that we can really do, our hands our tied at this moment and it's just a way of expressing some of those frustrations," said Callahan about Saturday's protest.

Callahan is also disappointed in the Facebook videos the Neenah Police Chief has been posting.

"It's almost a slap in the face to like reiterate the same stuff," said Callahan.

Thursday Chief Kevin Wilkinson with the Neenah Police Department apologized to Funk's family.

"I don't want to do anything to harm the family anymore, they're already hurting, they're grieving and I don't want to do anything that hurts or offends them," said Chief Wilkinson.

Chief Wilkinson says he's trying to strike a balance between informing the public yet still being sensitive to the family.

"We felt like we needed to explain to people so they understand a little bit about how the process works," said Chief Wilkinson.

However friends of Funk say police should be releasing more, including surveillance video.

"I know that this is a long, complicated investigation, no one's denying that part, but the part that shows Michael Funk threatening police that they had to shoot him, why can't that be released," said Eagle Nation Cycles owner, Steve Erato.

Police say they don't have the video anymore.  It has been handed off to the Department of Justice, which is in charge of the investigation.

"They think they need to protect the integrity of the investigation and that it erodes if you start releasing in piece mail," said Chief Wilkinson.

Callahan says the protest runs from 1 to 4 Saturday afternoon in front of Eagle Nation Cycles.
