A 3-year-old Texas boy died on Thursday after being left in a day care van near Houston for several hours on a hot day, KTRK-TV reported.
According to KTRK's report, the toddler remained in the van after going on a day care field trip. The boy stayed in the van for an estimated four hours, and it was not realized he was left in the van until the boy's father came to pick him up.
When the boy was found, he was unresponsive.
The van's driver and a chaperone were detained for questioning.
Constable Alan Rosen told KTRK that the boy was one of 28 children who was supposedly accounted for following the field trip on a class list.
Rosen told KTRK that temperatures inside of the van reached 113 degrees.
"It seems to me this was just gross negligence," Rosen told the station. "It's just tragic."
