Across the country, tensions between police and communities have reached some violent levels. But on Tuesday, law enforcement agencies worked to combat that negativity through National Night Out, a community event aimed at bringing officers and those they serve together.

In Greenville, the Outagamie County Sheriff's Department brought its search and rescue boat and SWAT team vehicle to help the community understand what they do. The Greenville Fire Department, Greenville EMS and ThedaCare Flight for Life also appeared at the event.

"We like to come out to these events and show that police are somebody that the community can come out and talk to, can trust," explained Paul Langenberg, Outagamie County Search and Rescue.

National Night Out gives community members the opportunity to talk to officers and ask questions in a friendlier setting.

"Having them come out and be able to ask us questions, ask us why do we have a SWAT team?" said Sgt. Nathan Borman, Outagamie County Sheriff's Department. "Why do we have armored vehicles? Why do we have these different things that maybe they have questions about? Ask us!"

Attendees say they appreciate the chance to speak with and develop positive relationships with officers.

"You're able to talk face-to-face, candid with firemen, fire women, policemen and form that bond," said Austin Matthews, who attended with his wife and son.

National Night Out occurs on the first Tuesday of August each year.
