MENASHA, Wis.- The parking lot sits empty outside Menasha High School.
"We needed to shut down the electricity in order to address the problem," said Menasha Schools Superintendent, Chris VanderHeyden.
The problem he's talking about is the same many are dealing with, too much water creating problems for homes and businesses.
"There was a room that the water was building up in and that water was running down through and the area where it was running through was near the electrical panels and that's where the hazard was being created," explained VanderHeyden.
Just a few minutes away from Menasha High School, Ryan Johnson, a plumber with Watters Plumbing in Menasha is working an extra long day.
"We've been fixing sump pumps left and right," said Johnson.
Many people's basements are sitting in several inches of water when Johnson arrives at their house.
"Once the sump pump is running again that will get most of it out the restoration company will then come and get the rest of the water out, tear carpeting, all those things so you don't get mold," said Johnson.
He says the best way to prevent water damage is to make sure you have a battery backup powered sump pump.
"It's cheaper to put in a battery backup than to have an insurance claim," said Johnson.
At Menasha High School they've had crews working all day to check the electrical units and clear the water. The superintendent says classes will start tomorrow at their normal time at the high school.
