Thousands of immigrant supporters traveled from across the state to downtown Milwaukee Monday, protesting Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke's desires to enforce federal immigration laws in the county.

May Day is also known as International Workers Day, supporting worker's rights for all people.

"We're going to Milwaukee for our Hispanic community to raise our voice," said Pastor Ricardo Torres from the Green Bay area.

From Green Bay, to Madison, to Racine, supporters jumped on buses bound for Milwaukee to demand the governor remove Sheriff Clarke, who wants to use his deputies and correction officers to enforce federal immigration laws.

"The only reason that we're here is to work and we're not here to steal and to be criminals," one protestor said.

Sheriff  Clarke has gone on record stating his support in allowing deputies to act as immigration officers, something traditionally only reserved for federal employees.

"i think we're going to get something good out of it. We're full of energy and we're all happy," said another protestor.

A major concern of those at the rally is the fear law enforcement will start racially profiling Hispanic people as part of a crack down on illegal immigration.

While deputies do not have the responsibility of serving as immigration officers today in Milwaukee County, many of these protestors are hopeful they won't get the right down the road.
