The Department of Labor’s investigation into Marinette County’s employment practices was among many key topics covered at Tuesday’s County Board meeting.

On Tuesday, Human Resources Director Jennifer Holtger provided an update on the investigation.  She said now it's being referred to it as a compliance review.

Holtger told NBC26 the county administrator received a letter from the Department of Labor stating they had jurisdiction to investigate Marinette County.

She said she didn't know why and any business could be investigated.  She said it usually happens after a complaint is made.

"This review can be a good thing," Holtger told the board.  "It doesn't mean anything will be found."

Holtger said the letter stated the investigation would be responsible for the administration and enforcement for federal labor standards including minimum wage, overtime, record keeping, and child labor laws.

She said the county was required to have a list of people employed during the last 24 months and things such as their title, start date, termination, and contact information.

"You're concerned any time the word investigation comes up in regard to the county, but I think you know (Holtger’s) comments that she said indicated that maybe things are little bit less of an investigation," said Marinette County Board Supervisor Rick Polzin.

The county administrator told us he doesn't know why they are being investigated and he did not speak with the investigator.

Holtger said the investigator told her she did not see anything of significance but she will continue to dig and the process could take as long as 3 months.
