Marathon County police officers and deputies are heading back home from Washington D.C. after honoring a brother in blue who lost his life in the line of duty.
They went to the capitol to remember Detective Jason Weiland of the Everest Metro Police Department.
Weiland was one of four people killed in the Wausau-area shootings last year.
Among those in the capital was Chief Clayton Schulz, who says he was close to Weiland and with him the day he died.
"We were friends, we were co-workers, we did a lot of work on duty and off," Chief Schulz said. "We actually went to the academy together, 20 years ago this year."
Marathon County Chief Deputy Chad Billeb also went to the ceremony.
"You never forget Jason's sacrifice and what the community went through," he said.
This week, local officers reflected on Weiland's life as others in uniform stood next to them shoulder to shoulder.
As they head back home, these men say they now have closure, but Weiland's story lives on with his name now etched in stone.
