Parents and students noticed an increased police presence outside Wilson Junior High School in Manitowoc Wednesday.

It was an effort to ease nervousness for parents and students after two 14-year-olds were taken into custody Tuesday for allegedly bringing a loaded gun to the school.

Manitowoc Public School District Superintendent Mark Holzman is grateful no students were injured, and that students felt comfortable enough with staff to let them know a weapon was in the building, he said.

"We continue to work with the relationship with the students and staff, and we believe it's the most important part of the safety of the building," he said.

Additional counselors were on hand Wednesday, helping students in need of support.

"We called an additional two counselors to be available for students and staff," said Holzman. "We have access to multiple counselors to in each junior high school and four high schools."

Some parents expressed concerns, while others said they aren't too worried, saying they're confident in the school district's efforts in keeping the students safe.

The two 14-year-old boys are accused of bringing a loaded .22 caliber revolver into Wilson Junior High School Tuesday. They told police they felt threatened by another group of students.

The school resource officer found the gun after two students told him they saw it.

The two teenagers are in a juvenile facility and face multiple charges.
