A federal grand jury has handed down a 19 count indictment against Manitowoc based Doctor Charles Szyman. The charges focus on alleged drug trafficking from his office at Holy Family Memorial Hospital.
According to court documents, Szyman prescribed individuals hundreds, sometimes thousands, of different pain killers at a time.
"What's concerning to us is the number of dosage units that were prescribed," said Lt. Dave Remiker, with the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office Metro Drug Unit.
From 2012 to 2015, Szyman prescribed an alarmingly high number of opiates including oxycodone and morphine among others.
"Literally thousands of high-end prescription pain medication, along with Fentanyl patches," Lt. Remiker said.
Szyman was fired from the hospital last November and is suspended from practicing medicine.
Each of the 19 counts has a potential of a maximum of 20 years in prison, according to Lt. Remiker.
Szyman's arraignment is on Wednesday.
