The Manitowoc City Council has gone on record saying they support Meijer's grocery chain replacing the race track at the counties Expo grounds. But as NBC26 explains the vote comes down to the county's board and not everyone is in favor.
After being on the market for more than ten years a portion of the Manitowoc county Expo grounds finally has an offer on it. But not everyone in town is thrilled about the potential of losing their race track.
It's empty now, but for about a dozen nights every summer the Manitowoc Expo race track can bring in the crowds.
"It's very busy. We have three thousand in attendance on a given day," says District 9 County Supervisor Mark Kopecky.
Supervisor Kopecky says many in his district don't want to lose the track.
"I've gotten over 200 calls and I can say I've only gotten a few that are for it," adds Kopecky.
But with this parcel of land being valued at 4 point 6 million dollars, and their being a interested buyer out there, the County Executive says it could be a great time to sell.
"I think it's an opportunity... I’m hearing mostly positive," says Bob Ziegelbauer the Manitowoc County Executive.
Ziegelbauer see's it as a chance to capitalize on a piece of county property, that hasn't brought in the revenue that a grocery store may be able to.
"We have to choose what's in the best use of that property for a long time," adds Ziegelbauer.
For now, likely just one more vote on the matter remains and 25 county supervisors hold the fate of this landmark in their hands.
The next time the public will be able to weigh in with their opinions on whether this is the right move or not, will be next Tuesday at the UW-Manitowoc campus at 7pm. County Supervisors will likely vote yes or no on the matter following that discussion which is open to the public.
