The Chilton man accused of leaving his infant daughter outside a Menasha bar while he was drinking has been sentenced to nine months in jail.

Merriett Cox, 53, pleaded no contest to charges of neglecting a child and bail jumping.

Cox's attorney tried to lower his penalty to a year of probation, but his ex-wife and mother of his daughter said he deserved a stiffer penalty.

"If you take into consideration everything of his past, and I don't know what he's capable of doing, and what he's done is unacceptable," she said.

Cox was accused of leaving his 2 1/2 month old daughter in his car while he drank at the Redliner Bar in Menasha in early March.

Officers were called to the bar for reports of an uncooperative, drunk man. Cox had arrived at the bar around noon, but employees eventually would not serve him because of how drunk he was. They would not let him drive and made attempts to find him a ride home, police said.

Cox mentioned to bartenders he needed to check on his girl, according to police. The employees then checked the man's car and found the baby, police said.

The child did not appear injured, but was taken to Theda Care Regional Medical Center in Neenah as a precaution. She was reunited with her mother, who had been at work.
