The Marinette County Sheriff's Office has identified the man killed in Thursday's fatal officer-involved shooting in Peshtigo.
Jesse Cole Shuping, 35, of Portsmouth, Virginia, was killed by officers Thursday after he allegedly fled from them and had a handgun they felt put them in danger. He is a convicted felon from Virginia and North Carolina, the sheriff's office said. He was wanted on a grand larceny charge in Virginia.
Shuping had been in the Marinette area for the past month or so, deputies said. He spent time in a local shelter before befriending someone who let him stay at her residence, according to the sheriff's office.
The incident at the motel appeared to be Shuping trying to collect a debt he believed was owed to him by someone he thought was staying at the Budget Inn in Marinette, according to deputies.
The names of the officers involved have not been released. They are scheduled to have formal interviews with the Wisconsin Department of Justice next week.
The Marinette County Sheriff's Office said the incident started just after midnight Thursday at the Budget Inn.
Officers said through the investigation it was determined the suspect may be at or near a residence on State Highway 64 in Peshtigo.
Officers saw a man enter a vehicle and flee westbound on Highway 64.
Deputies said the suspect, later determined to be Shuping, exited the vehicle after going into the ditch near Schacht Road and had a handgun that placed officers in danger.
Shuping was shot by officers and died at the scene.
