ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities say one person is dead after an apparent canoeing accident in northern Wisconsin.
Firefighters and emergency workers were called Sunday morning about a partially submerged canoe in the "hot pond" of the Xcel Energy Bay Front Generating Station on the Ashland waterfront.
Ashland Fire Department Captain Scott Thimm tells The Daily Press says the pond was frozen over, so rescue swimmers in survival suits had to break ice to reach the canoe about 125 yards offshore.
The victim was loaded onto the fire department's "ice angel" rescue craft and brought to shore, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities don't know how long the man had been in the water. The victim's name has not been released.
