MADISON - Former Governor Tommy Thompson will have a permanent place on Madison's North Side.
Madison Area Technical College plans to rename its Health Simulation Center after the longest-serving governor in Wisconsin history. The center, located inside the Health Education Building on the Truax Campus, trains students in a variety of fields how to respond to medical situations with realistic simulation equipment.
The Republican governor, who served from 1987 to 2001, started a charity that provides scholarships for students entering the health care field.
A ceremony will be held at the Health Education Building, 1705 Hoffman St., at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Thompson is scheduled to speak at the event along with MATC President Jack Daniels, Mark Lausch, dean of the School of Health Education, and Nate Elias, president of the Tommy G. Thompson Charity.
Thompson also served as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2001 to 2005 under President George W. Bush and has the Tommy G. Thompson Commerce Center on West Washington Avenue named after him.
The health center open in 2013. It is used by Madison College's EMS, nursing, respiratory therapist, physical therapist assistant, occupational therapy assistant, surgical technologist, medical assistant, optometric, dental and radiography programs.
