APPLETON, Wis. (NBC 26) -- The YMCA of the Fox Cities is working with the Appleton Area School District and the Boys and Girls Club to help fill child care gaps left behind during the mandated school closure.
The YMCA of the Fox Cities tells NBC 26 they can provide child care for about 1,000 4k through 8th-grade AASD students at about 20 different sites throughout the area whose parents are unable to be at home with their children.
Dr. Kathryn Herzog, Program Executive Director of Child Care for the YMCA of the Fox Cities, says they are working on making their staff available to help students work through virtual learning while under their care.
"We will be providing staff that will help the children sign on to their chrome books and help them with their virtual learning, provide support with their homework and when the homework and virtual learning is done we will provide all kinds of enrichment activities for them to do," Herzog says.
"We want to help the families the children get the education and the learning that they need. Even though it might look a little different right now," she adds.
Herzon also says they are meeting with AASD leaders to talk about child care costs. Both the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club have resources available to help families who need financial help with child care tuition but those resources are limited.
If you would like to donate money, school supplies or volunteer contact any of the YMCA of the Fox Cities branches or the Boys and Girls Club of the Fox Valley.
