KIEL (NBC 26) -- The Kiel Police Department is recommending more than 200 felony counts against a woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a business where she worked.

Police say officers were contacted back in June by a man who suspected that one of his employees may have stolen funds from the business during her employment. According to a police statement, investigators did an audit of the business's financial records and determined that a former employee stole more than $65,000 from the business. It allegedly happened over the course of her employment in the years 2018 and 2019, police say.

Kiel Police say the department turned over its investigation to the Manitowoc County District Attorney’s office with a referral for criminal charges, including over 200 felony counts related to Theft by Virtue of Employment, Forgery, Uttering, and Fraudulent Writings.

Police arrested the 51-year-old woman in Kewaunee. She is being held in Manitowoc County Jail.
