GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- It's tough to rake your leaves into a pile for collection when the leaves aren't ready to fall. On top of that, many people in Northeast Wisconsin now have a base of snow sitting on top of what did come down.
In Green Bay, leaf collection started nearly three weeks ago. At this point, Public Works crews say they have collected nearly half of the mess piled up across town. but some trees still have a lot to give.
Across Green Bay, piles are still waiting to be swooped up and, weather permitting, the city says they will continue the process until just before Thanksgiving. But if the area continues getting snow, the city will have to convert their leaf pickup trucks to snow plows. This means you'll likely have to let that pile of leaves decompose on your terrace until next spring, if the snow continues.
"The trees aren't anywhere close to falling yet so I am not sure if they go through the snow blower but that might be what they're going to do,” said Green Bay resident Anita Jhnke.
There is an alternative: instead of waiting for the city, you could take care of the mess yourself and drop your leaves off at a yard waste site. But the one thing public works doesn't want you to do with the leaves is pile them on the street next to the curb. They say that can impact our water quality when the debris is swept into the storm drains.
