The next generation of spacecrafts could soon be lifting off by rockets built in Wisconsin. The Sierra Nevada Corporation manufactures and tests is “Vortex” engine in central Wisconsin, with hundreds of high tech engineering and manufacturing jobs in the state.

“Bringing rocket science to Wisconsin on a daily basis, and making it a business in Wisconsin,” is what it’s about according to SNC vice president of propulsion & environmental systems. He, and others from the company, showed off the Vortex in a test fire event in late May.

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin attended.

“I’m proud to champion investment that will spur innovation, boost manufacturing and promote 250 good paying, clean energy jobs right here in Wisconsin,” Baldwin said.

The Wisconsin-made engine will be used for the SNC Dream Chaser, a spacecraft that is scheduled to begin servicing the International Space Station on NASA missions in 2021.
