WINNEBAGO COUNTY — Winnebago County Coroner Barry Busby submitted his resignation letter on Wednesday, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office.
The Winnebago County Board of Supervisors had censured Busby and issued a vote of No Confidence. According to a resolution approved by the county's Judiciary and Public Safety Committee August 12, Busby had spent weeks at a time out of state during 2018 and 2019, incurring a cost to taxpayers when deputy coroners must cover for his absence.
Busby has also faced sexual harassment allegations. The resolution document says Busby didn't deny some of the allegations.
The resolution document noted that Busby was first appointed as the Winnebago County Coronor in 1997, serving for the past 22 years, most recently elected in November 2018.
In a submitted resignation letter, Busby said his last day in office will be Oct. 31, 2019. Busby writes in the letter that resignation date is in honor of his mother's birthday.
In a news release from the Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Matz said he has notified Governor Evers and will file the resignation with the Winnebago County Clerk.
