SUAMICO (NBC 26) - — There's a new challenge circulating among towns and villages in Brown County. It's to see which municipality can get the most people to respond to the 2020 U.S. Census.

The Village of Suamico started the fun challenge on Facebook. Right now, about 83 percent of people have filled it out in the village, but they're pushing for a full 100 percent response rate.

“From what I can tell, in 2010 was our highest response rate we had about 86 percent,” said Suamico Village Administrator Alex Kaker. “We have some more work to do but we're well on our way.”

Overall, Brown County is seeing a higher response rate than the rest of the country. The national response average is about 61 percent, in Brown County it’s just over 75 percent. While there's no prize for the winning municipality, Kaker said there's more at stake.

“It makes a big impact for us, in terms of long term planning throughout the county, as well as Suamico,” Kaker said. “It also helps determine the number of congressional seats. We know that Brown County estimated each person counted equals about $1,800 a year in federal funding for things like hospitals and schools.”
