OSHKOSH, Wis. — An unattended cooking fire is being blamed for an early morning fire, according to the Oshkosh Fire Department.
Firefighters responded around 2:45 Thursday morning. 5 children and 3 adult residents escaped the apartment safely. They are being assisted by the Red Cross.
The only working smoke alarm in the building was in the basement and it was chirping due to a low battery.
Firefighters say this fire broke out less than a block away from the last one.
Firefighters are reminding people to be alert when cooking on the stove and to test your smoke alarms to make sure they are working.
