STURGEON BAY (NBC26) - The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin has a big fundraiser coming up to help support youth mentoring in our area.
Saturday morning, we had the chance to meet with a special pair brought together by the program.
Lori Vorphal of Sturgeon Bay has been 9-year-old Kalee’s big sister for three years. Although they’re not related by blood, the two have developed a relationship like family.
“I absolutely love being Kalee's big sister, but I also learn a lot from her,” Lori said. Kaylee adding the biggest thing she's learned from Lori, "being nice to others."
Lori and Kalee are just one of several pairs within the BBBS organization which is currently on track to helping more than 600 kids this year. The organization asks if you're a big to spend at least an hour a few times a month for about a year with your little. Now you don't have to go past that time. Lori and Kalee have now known each other for 3 years.
This program is something Kalee's mom Erinn said has helped her grow more confident.
“I wanted her to experience things I wasn't able to when I was younger, and to see what it’s like to have a big sister, because she is a big sister,” Erinn said.
Saturday, Lori, Kalee and her family went trick-or-treating downtown Sturgeon Bay; and while it was all fun for the day, they also spend their time giving back.
“She’s really embraced it, we do a lot of volunteer activities,” Lori said. “Doing things for others, we do lots of crafts. Sometimes we do homework.”
No matter what activity the two are doing, they always grab some ice cream to celebrate their time together.
BBBS said they're always looking for more bigs and littles to help shape the way for local kids.
The 27th Annual Taste of the Town is coming up November 8th. Money raised from the event will benefit the program that helped bring Lori and Kalee together. NBC26 is a proud sponsor of the event, and our own Nina Sparano will be emceeing.
The event is a chance for you to try some of the best food the Green Bay area has to offer, as well as learn more about the program.
