GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — The traditions of Ash Wednesday will change a bit this week.
Normally ashes are placed on a person's forehead. According to the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay, this year ashes will be dropped on people’s heads.
This is a way to get closer to normal and still stay safe.
“This is not so much a new practice, placing ashes on top of the head, but it's a recovery of what Christians do in other parts of the world which works really well for us now, because it's a little bit safer than actually physically touching the person's forehead,” explained Father John Girotti.
The Ash Wednesday services should otherwise be normal outside the distribution of ashes.
