It's Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week. As temperatures rise, so does the potential for severe weather in northeast Wisconsin.

Meteorologist say we average about 23 tornadoes a year. Last year, Wisconsin saw 33.

Experts have a few tips to prepare. Listen to alerts on the radio and set up alerts on your smart phone with apps like Storm Shield. Be sure to watch NBC26 for weather alerts as well.

Wisconsin Emergency Management also offers these tornado safety tips to practice at home:

- Move to a basement or the innermost part of your home
- Put as many walls as possible between you and the storm

Another way to prepare is through a drill. There are two statewide tornado drills scheduled for the public on Thursday, April 12.
