GREEN BAY (NBC26) — Lois Gies requested an absentee ballot at her local gym today.

“I worked out earlier so it’s convenient," said Gies. "It was very easy.”

The Coalition of Voting Organizations in Brown County, or COVO, helped register people at the East Side YMCA Tuesday morning. It's been a challenge getting people to register this year, said Charlotte Goska, co-leader of COVO.

“It’s been difficult for groups like ours to get out in public like we normally do because of COVID," she said.

Election day is only 42 days away. And right now, around 75 percent of eligible voters in Brown County are actually registered, according to the state Elections Commission. That's why registering online is so key, said Goska.

“During online voter registration, it’s super easy," she said. "So take advantage of that and do it today. We’re trying to reach out to people and tell people that the technology is there to do it yourself.”

Many people register to vote on Election Day, but that's not a good idea this year, said Goska.

“It’s important to do it before election day because we’re expecting long lines," she said.

COVO is out in front of the voting mural in downtown Green Bay, right across the street from the Central Library, every Saturday and Sunday until Election Day from noon until 4 p.m. They can help you register to vote, request an absentee ballot or answer any other voting questions you have. COVO also can cover the cost of a Wisconsin ID if you don't have one.

“This is a battleground state, and the vote here is going to be close and every vote counts," said Goska. "So no matter which side you’re on, you’re going to want to get out there and vote.”
