KAUKAUNA, Wis. (NBC 26) -- A local woman says she wanted to spread a message of peace and positivity after the incident in Minneapolis, Minnesota involving police and George Floyd. Sharlaina Coleman says her goal is to make people smile and encourage learning when it comes to race and culture.
A few weeks ago, Coleman made a sign saying, "Honk 4 Peace." She went to downtown Kaukauna where she owns two businesses and held her sign high for drivers traveling through downtown. She says, although she had lots of support, she says she also received some negativity. She then had a friend who wanted to help her and did he have quite the idea.
So she returned to downtown Kaukauna with her friend who dressed as Spiderman. She says he has been holding up the sign and the response has been electric. People driving by honk their horns, fire trucks and ambulance sound their sirens. Coleman says people can't stop smiling when they see Spiderman and the message he has to share.
The community has embraced the positive message as well with many families, officials and kids wanting to get a photo with the friendly neighborhood Spiderman.
Coleman says she hopes to continue to spread awareness and encourage education for race and culture. She says there will be more superheros coming to help and they're hopeful they can bring activities to do with the community including a story time in the park with superheros.
