TOWNSHIP OF CENTERVILLE, Wis. — Authorities say a 17-year-old boy has died following an early Thursday morning crash.
Around 1:15 a.m., Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office says a deputy spotted a van speeding southbound on County Highway LS near County Highway X in the Township of Centerville. The deputy tried to pull the van over, but authorities say the driver sped off.
Moments later, authorities say the driver lost control on a road curve and went into a ditch. The van rolled over and crashed into a tree. The 17-year-old boy from Sheboygan, identified as a passenger in the van, was thrown from the backseat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A news release from Manitowoc County Sheriff identifies the driver as a 15-year-old girl and another passenger was a 14-year-old girl. Both were from Sheboygan. The news release says the girls were trapped inside the van after the crash. Crews had to use the Jaws of Life to pull the girls out and take them to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The news release says a preliminary investigation reveals the van was driven without the owner's consent and was going at speeds in excess of 80 mph.
