Sturgeon Bay man accused of killing his wife back in 1975 pleads not guilty

STURGEON BAY, Wis. — A man accused of murdering his wife more than 40 years ago entered a plea of not guilty in court Friday.

Richard Pierce is facing charges of first-degree murder and disinterment of dead. According to court documents, Pierce’s wife at the time, Carol Jean, disappeared around September 5, 1975.

In court Friday, prosecution believes there could be more than 40 witnesses and thinks the trial could last 4 weeks. The prosecution brought in three boxes of evidence at Friday's hearing.

Online court records show the defense advised the court of "voluminous discovery", requested a status conference within 30 days, and expects a lot of motions. Prosecution also expects a lot of motions.

Defense will be filing bond motion to be taken up at next hearing, online records show. A status conference is scheduled for May 31.
