OSHKOSH (NBC 26) -- In the immediate aftermath of the officer-involved shooting at Oshkosh West High School, the school district says everyone responded how they were supposed to.

The district follows ALICE Protocol: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. Not all students went on lockdown right away, some did evacuate first, which is what the district says is proper procedure.

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Oshkosh Area School District Superintendent Dr. Cartwright says the traditional methods of ALICE are not always the best in an active shooter scenario. She says if someone can evacuate right away, that's what they should do, which is why some students said that they ran or hid under their desks.

“We are very grateful to the families of Oshkosh West students for following our safety procedures and their patience and cooperation during the reunification process,” Dr. Cartwright said during the news conference. “Our students’ safety is our number one priority. We are committed to providing a school environment where students can feel safe in mind and body."

The students and staff members did end up evacuating to Perry Tipler Middle School. Overall, they say they're grateful for the proactive measures they have in place and that everyone followed procedure.
