Sports betting under debate in Wisconsin

GREEN BAY -- A 2018 decision by the Supreme Court gave states the chance to legalize sports betting, if they want.

So far, there has been little progress in Wisconsin, but there are some options that could open up the industry. The first is a constitutional amendment, which would require support from both legislators and then voters in Wisconsin.

Another way would not involve voters. Wisconsin tribes could try to negotiate with the state and allow sports betting inside their casinos. Whether the state should go for that is up for debate.

“For me, it's more about the ability for people to do it and make sure they're protected,” said State Rep. Tyler Vorpagel.

"The true purpose of our government is to protect our citizens,” said Lorri Pickens, with the group Citizens Against Expanded Gambling. “And in order for the government to win in a gambling scenario, the citizens have to lose."

Other states have already moved forward and allowed sports betting.
