DE PERE (NBC 26) — One organization is building beds for children who don’t have a place to sleep.

"Can you imagine having to maybe crawl in the corner, lay on your clothes and having to use your backpack for a pillow," said Dan Vermeulen, the Co-President of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, De Pere.

The De Pere chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace said this past weekend was a success as they built about 20 beds thanks to the help of volunteers.

They say as a result they now currently have beds, mattresses, sheets, and pillows ready for delivery to children ages 3-17 in the area.

The chapter says they believe in the importance of providing this need as no child should have to sleep on the floor.

"I thought well I could do that, I could build beds, I could do that in my garage," Vermeulen said.

Currently the chapter says they are serving the 54115, 54303, and 54304 zip codes.

"It's really a special thing when we pull in with the cot, the trailer behind us here. We open up the door and the kids come out and they see that that is their bed. They just get so excited,” Vermeulen said.

For those looking to request a bed, you can go on theirFacebook page or go to shpbeds.org to request a bed for your child or for a child you know who doesn’t have a bed of their own.
