SHAWANO (NBC 26) — A Shawano school board member is asked to resign after a social media post the board calls “racially and socially insensitive.”

Sunday, the Shawano School Board held a special meeting regarding member Mart Grams. The board said they’ve received complaints regarding his social media activity Saturday.

The Facebook post on his personal account reads: “You know George Floyd is drug free for 2 months.”

Now, the board is calling for Grams to resign; however, Grams tells us “to resign would be a surrender to false accusations.”

In a statement, Grams tells us, “I have no problem with the board saying they are unhappy with the post. I can agree it was insensitive, even a dark joke. It was a joke. The racist label is outrageous. In today’s world, it is impossible to fight the racist card; yet, the slanders are beyond my belief. The board resolution, written by whom I don’t know, was not acted on. I was not in attendance, so unable to react.”

The school district posted to Facebook Sunday saying Grams is speaking as an individual and his comments don’t represent the board or school district as a whole. They add, they cannot remove an elected member, it must be done through the electoral process, including through recall, but not by their own action.

Sunday evening the board passed the resolution calling for Grams removal, you can read the full statement here.
