FOND DU LAC (NBC 26) -- Several dogs needed rescuing from a house fire Wednesday, according to the Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue Department.
Crews responded to a fire on 111 8th Street, the department stated on social media. The department said the fire was on the first floor of a 2-story wood frame house. The person living in the upper unit was able to get out unhurt. Other people who lived on the first floor and basement were not in the home at the time of the fire.
Fire crews successfully rescued several adult dogs and several puppies, the department said in a news release. The Fond du Lac County Humane Society was called to help care for the pets.
In addition to the dogs, the fire department said a hedgehog, lizard, and exotic birds all survived. Two exotic Sugar Gliders did not survive. No one was reported injured.
Crews extinguished the fire and kept it contained to a first floor bedroom. The fire department said there were no working smoke alarms on the first floor or basement level. The building was deemed to be uninhabitable. 12 people have been displaced as a result of the fire.
Police and fire are looking into what caused the fire.
