Racine Police search for suspect who reportedly stole purse from crash victim

A man who initially helped a woman out of a rollover crash may have stolen her purse, according to Racine Police.

Police posted an alert on their Facebook page asking for help identifying a man at the May 7 crash scene.

Officials said the man, seen wearing a camouflage sweat suit, first helped a woman after the rollover. As she waited for help, the suspect reportedly went through her car and took her purse.

"It’s surprising to me to hear that they would’ve taken advantage of the people if they did under those circumstances," said Bob Bojcic, who witnessed the aftermath of the accident.

Bojcic said he recognized the suspect police are trying to identify.

"Him and another guy were over here, and there was two women in the car and they were trying to extract them out of the car," said Bojcic.

"The car was still running and they did go back in and out of the car several times reaching in and out, but at that point they just appear to be looking like they were trying to help somebody," Bojcic said.

As police worked to identify the theft suspect, there was a sense of disbelief anyone would take advantage of someone like this.

"I wasn’t suspecting that these guys would be, you know, trying to steal personal belongings from anybody, and so that makes it even worse. Bad enough that your stuff gets stolen, but in those circumstances, that’s not good," said Bojcic.
