GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- Green Bay city officials are exploring the option that would require masks for anyone out in public in the city.

Tonight is the first meeting where a committee will discuss the ordinance.

The potential face mask ordinance is one of many agenda items that a committee has to discuss, but the organizer of the ordinance says it is easily the most important topic.

It’s one of several steps the ordinance is going through before it becomes official. If it passes the committee tonight, then it will go to a full city council vote next Tuesday, which is when the city leaders will decide if the ordinance will go into effect.

Anyone out in public in Green Bay, including employees, will have to wear masks. This includes at restaurants, shopping centers and other locations.

Tonight's meeting is scheduled to begin around 5:30.

The possibility of a face mask ordinance comes as other Wisconsin counties and cities created similar ordinances of their own, including Appleton and Milwaukee.
