GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — According to the Port of Green Bay, the 2020 shipping season is off to a good start with it already up from the 2019 season.
Nearly 228,000 tons of cargo moved in or our of the port between March 15 and the end of April.
"Part of it is this is reflective of quarters that came in before COVID-19 really took effect around March or April," explains Mark Walter, Business Development Manage for Brown County Port and Resource Recovery Department. "Industries were receiving what they had ordered earlier in the year. It means that people were expecting to be doing a lot of building, and that the economy was booming along pretty good as we started this year. That's why we are seeing a lot of material coming in"
Directors say they are cautiously optimistic about the season with high water levels and the COVID-19 pandemic.
