APPLETON, Wis. — The Appleton Fire Department confirmed a firefighter was killed in the line of duty during a shooting.

The firefighter was shot, along with three other people, while on the scene of a medical call on the 100 block of E. Washington Street. That's the location of the Valley Transit Center.

The medical call came in around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

An Appleton police officer was also shot and is recovering in a local hospital.

The firefighter killed was a 14-year veteran of the fire department. Funeral arrangements for the firefighter are still pending.

The investigation is ongoing.

Fire Chief Jeremy Hansen and Mayor Hanna will give an update sometime Thursday.

Valley Transit says passengers should avoid the Valley Transit Center until it is reopened. Passengers will be transferred at Franklin & Superior.

The Appleton Public Library is closed until further notice.
