APPLETON (NBC 26) -- A dedication ceremony to honor the history of Appleton’s paper industry giant and Appleton Alderman Frank Weinkauf was held Tuesday.

Weinkauf’s family members worked to raise money for a plaque dedicated to Weinkauf, who was born in a covered wagon in 1879 and spent 38 years in the paper industry from 1895–1933. In 1935, he was elected as an alderman to the Appleton Common Council, serving until 1945.

The plaque and mural entitled “Paper Wings” that was painted by Appleton artist Chad Brady are located on the east end of the North Island Trail. The wall the mural is painted on was part of an expansion project by Neenah Papers several years ago.
