MANITOWOC (NBC 26) — One person was sent to the hospital after a fire in the early morning hours of Thursday.

The fire started from a kitchen stove top on the 2300 block of Paul Road in Manitowoc. Fire crews said some paper products nearby boiling water caught fire, and when the resident tried to put it out, it continued to grow. The person left the house to alert a neighbor and call 911.

When Manitowoc Fire arrived, they quickly put the flames out within 10 minutes, but do not know how much damage the fire caused at this time. The person who lived there was taken to a hospital for concern of smoke inhalation and a superficial burn to the arm.

The fire chief said, "I cannot not stress enough when it comes to kitchen safety to create a zone of safety around the stove and keep combustible materials away from the stove top. Also remember to keep an eye on what you heat."

Afterward, he gave special recognition to Manitowoc Police Officer Novak who helped the injured resident, as well as a local neighbor who opened her house to the neighbors in order to provide shelter in the cold.
