STURGEON BAY (NBC 26) -- In Sturgeon Bay on Wednesday afternoon, about 30 people took part in a polar plunge.

The Southern Door Volunteer Fire Department helped remove some ice so the chill-seekers could take the polar plunge into the icy waters of Lake Michigan.

Surprisingly, spectators say it wasn't a belly flop that stole the show.

"The favorite part was the dog,” Chris Sadur. “The dog that refused to go in. Because dogs are apparently a lot smarter than some of us humans."

This is the tenth year they've been taking the New Year’s dip outside of Waterfront Mary's Bar and Grill. Money raised goes to help fund the volunteer fire department.
