OSHKOSH, Wis. (NBC26) -- If you talk to anyone who has lived in Oshkosh for any length of time, they probably had visited or had heard of 'Little Oshkosh.

The park had been a staple in the community for 22 years and the Oshkosh City Parks Department says a replacement was needed due to safety concerns, guidelines changing and the wooden structure was deteriorating.

The new Oshkosh Community Playground opened the last weekend in October. It was made possible by several organizations including the City of Oshkosh, Oshkosh Parks Department and many generous donors.

Organizers say that playgrounds offer free activity for families. They can help grow kids creativity and imagination.

The design was a top choice when it was voted on in July 2019. The concept includes several innovative and fun elements to encourage active play.

The Oshkosh Parks department says they've had a handful of people reach out about getting a piece of 'Little Oshkosh' and they said they have a limited number of cartoon caricatures and parts of the picket fence that will be available as part of the city's auction.
