WASHINGTON D.C. (NBC 26) -- The Old Glory Honor Flight flew out Wednesday morning on Mission 53. Two planes of veterans went to Washington D.C., where it was an incredibly emotional day.

Between the two Honor Flights, there were nearly 200 veterans flying out. Some of those veterans tell NBC 26 they never imagined they would be in the nation’s capital.

When the flights landed in D.C., the veterans were greeted by crowds of people, cheering and shaking their hands, and thanking them for their service.

From the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and all the stops in between, it was an emotional day. Some knew it would be, while others weren’t too sure what to expect, but either way this was a day these veterans won’t forget.

“I come because a lot of my buddies are right here on the wall,” said Buzz Vermillion, a Vietnam veteran. “It's good to be here, it's good to be here, very moving.”

He and many others traced the names of fallen veterans, remembering their sacrifice.

These veterans have been getting the “thank you” many say they never had when they came back from war.
