GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- It's not typically a group we think of when it comes to worrying about food, but on the NWTC campus, there are students who need help. On this “Make A Difference Day”, staff worked to answer that need.
On NWTC'S first “Make A Difference Day”, student support specialist Gema Garcia is at a familiar place: the NWTC Shared Harvest Pantry. It’s where food comes in, for students to take out.
"They come in, they grab a meal,” said Garcia.
The pantry served 317 students last year. Now, in just three months, its already topped that number.
"The need has been huge,” Garcia said.
Campus leaders say when it's not being met. It's harder for hungry students to succeed.
"We have students that are homeless and have to make it easy for them,” Garcia explained. “They might not have a stove available or anything like that, so we have those products as well, so students really take advantage of this opportunity."
Hunger, of course, goes beyond campus. So, while Garcia is unpacking, other staff are doing the opposite - filling bags of food to send into the community and even out of the country.
"For me service and giving of my time is an important part of who I am," said Student Services Vice President Colleen Simpson.
Many others with around 50 volunteers here to package thousands of bags. Volunteers were also asked to come with a food donation that will go to the student pantry.
It’s helping Garcia and making a difference.
"Have more to provide for our students,” explained Garcia. "Today is going to be extremely beneficial."
If you'd like to get involved and help supply the pantry. You can donate either food or money at the student support office on campus. It could make a big difference for an NWTC student.
