Last year, back-to-school shoppers were given the first week in August to purchase school related items with no sales tax. But this year, the budget does not include a sales tax break and that has some shoppers questioning why.
16 other states are currently giving their citizens a sales tax break on school supplies to save families and teachers money. But after giving it a try for just one year in Wisconsin, Governor Evers has decided it wasn't worth it. Evers has said that last summer’s tax break didn't really change people's buying behavior. The Governor added he didn't think the incentive worked.
"I think it's terrible that they took it off,” said Lisa Steidl, a shopper in Outagamie County. “To be honest, I think wherever in the budget it needs to come from, it needs to get put back on."
Since 2010, a total of 19 states have embraced the tax-free break for school supply shopping. Wisconsin has now become the third state to opt out of the practice.
