MILWAUKEE -- A nine-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in the face Thursday evening.
It happened at approximately 8:20 p.m. near 15th Street and Meinecke Avenue.
Milwaukee police said two groups armed with rifles and pistols were engaged in a "shootout." At some point, several bullets were fired into a home, hitting the girl.
More than 40 shell casings were recovered from the scene.
Milwaukee police said they are currently working to identify suspects.
