A new bill introduced to the Wisconsin state legislature could eliminate the sales tax on diapers and tampons, our news partners in Madison reported .

Megan Sollenberger, the Executive Director of the Dane County Diaper Bank, said that this bill would help families in need tremendously. She gives away more than 10,000 diapers a month to 120 families which only covers a fraction of the need.

"I think that some people minimize the impact that just a few dollars a month might have on a family," she said. "But I think that's really overlooking the bigger problem of the deep-rooted impact that poverty has on a family."

Diapers can cost around $70 to $80 a month per baby.

In addition to eliminating the diaper tax, the bill introduced by Madison Rep. Melissa Sargent would get rid of taxes on tampons, sanitary napkins, and undergarments for incontinence.

"Menstrual products, diapers, and undergarments for incontinence are not a luxury or optional, they are necessities," Sargent said in a news release. "(This bill) simply works to recognize these products as the necessities that they are."
