New winter parking plan in Manitowoc

MANITOWOC (NBC 26) -- Manitowoc is putting new winter parking rules into place this week that will allow people to park anytime overnight unless it's snowing.

The city will implement this plan towards the end of the week. Drivers can park their car anytime overnight in winter months, unless the city puts out winter weather notice telling drivers they can't.

What the city plans to do is put out notices via emails, social media and even the town website saying, "parking is prohibited overnight due to winter weather.”

When that happens, drivers have to move their cars off main roads. If a notice is not sent out, then drivers can park on city streets overnight. The city says this new plan will make it easier for everybody in Manitowoc.

"It helps the citizens, they are able now to park on those streets, when there is not snow on the streets,” said Operations Division Manager Chad Scheinoha. “It also helps out plow operators as well.”

Residents Manitowoc can also get text alerts on their phone for when a parking ban goes into effect.

NBC 26 reached to the city of Green Bay to see it they plan on using a plan like this one. They said it is illegal to park in Green Bay overnight unless pre-approved by the city or a snow emergency issued.
