NEENAH (NBC 26) -- All Neenah Joint School District schools will move to online learning beginning October 5, the school district announced in an email Friday.

"This decision is primarily driven by community positivity rates, which are currently among the highest in the country," the school district says.

The school district also says the student absenteeism rate at most schools is above the threshold established for keeping schools open. While staff absenteeism has fluctuated, the school district said there have been challenges in providing enough substitute coverage in buildings on a daily basis.

If school and community data improves by October 15, a decision will be made at that point whether to return to a full in-person or hybrid status on October 19. The school district says this transition only affects students attending school in person. Those enrolled in virtual classes will continue as usual.

A free meal pickup will be offered for the week of October 5-9. Meals may be ordered by Sunday, October 4 at 6 p.m. through a form on the District website and may be picked up on Monday, October 5 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the main lot at Neenah High School and the Reed St. lot at Shattuck Middle School. Breakfast and lunch will be available for any child under the age of 18. Meal information for the following weeks will be provided next week.
