MANITOWOC COUNTY (NBC 26) — I-43 is now open after a multi-car pile-up. The sheriff's office said there was a total of six vehicles involved which included a semi, Lamers bus, box truck, straight truck, passenger car, and a pickup truck towing a trailer.
Only one individual needed to be transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Tuesday at approximately 6:47 p.m., the sheriff's office said deputies and EMS personnel responded to I-43 northbound just south of CTH JJ for reports of a multi-vehicle crash.
The sheriff's office said a 2020 Ford pickup truck, hauling an enclosed trailer, lost control while traveling northbound. The vehicle went into the east ditch and jackknifed. A 2007 Freightliner semi-tractor/trailer unit was traveling behind the pickup truck. The operator of the semi lost control, jackknifed, and partially entered the median.
According to the sheriff's office, the semi-trailer was blocking the majority of the northbound lanes. A 2019 Nissan Versa collided with the semi-trailer resulting in non-life-threatening injuries to the 25-year-old driver from Marinette. She was transported by ambulance to Froedtert Holy Family Memorial Hospital.
A Lamers charter bus also collided with the semi-trailer. The bus driver was the only person in the vehicle and he was uninjured. Due to the northbound lanes being blocked, traffic was detoured off the Interstate at USH 151.
While crews cleared this scene, the sheriff's office said an unrelated FedEx box truck and an unrelated straight truck were also removed from the median. Both vehicles previously slid into the median in the same area.
Speed, visibility, and road conditions appear to be factors in these crashes.
