The City of Milwaukee Public Safety and Health Committee voted 4-1 Thursday to advance an ordinance that would ban "single-use" straws at bars and restaurants in the city.

The measure will now go to the common council. The proposed ordinance will prohibit bars and restaurants from automatically providing plastic straws to customers.

One caveat, however, is bars and restaurants can provide a customer with a straw if they simply ask for one - to accommodate a disability, or simply due to preference.

The ordinance will now go to the common council for a vote. If passed, the ordinance will take effect April 14, 2020.

The ordinance passed with a vote of 4-1. Only Alderman Bob Donovan opposed it.
